For example, if you had the choice to full fund a 529 college fund for your children now instead of waiting until they went to college, would you do it? Funding a 529 fund is a pretty big upfront expense. But, the difference between the upfront cost and the cost of college tuition eighteen years from know is huge. Let’s say that you did fully fund the college fund early on. Now, fast forward fifteen or sixteen years into the future. You daughter comes to you and gives you the great news that she has been accepted to the best university in your state. It is a bit expensive but it is the best and by graduating from there she is almost guaranteed a great career.
There is only one problem. The economy is in a deep recession and you are worried about loosing your job, keeping your house and you may have to dip into your retirement fund just to survive. At first your heart sinks as you think about all of these things. But then you remember that you had planned for, bad times, your recession survival plan, and had fully funded her college fund when she was really young. Now you think about how smart you were for planning ahead and thinking about saving money for bad times like recessions.

You understood the truth about saving money and were able to leverage that truth for creating a recession survival plan for when and if it happens.
A good recession survival plan will always have a good well thought out, and realistic savings plan. Putting together a good savings plan takes a little time and thought on your part but it is time well spent. Knowing what you need to save for and how much you need to save will mean the difference between maintaining your accustomed lifestyle and having to downsize during hard economic times.
